Kara-Tōge, meaning Chinese mountain pass. A blue-black ridge of glaze over a white body.
The Kara-Tōge Chawan is a Mino ware matcha bowl in two glazes: a chalky white body and a deep blue-black glaze that runs around the upper third and stops in a soft, uneven line, like a ridge above the snowline. The blue-black carries just over the lip; the inside is white with a fine speckle, so the colour of your matcha shows honestly against it. At 11 cm across and 6.5 cm high it is a compact bowl that sits well in one hand, the right size for a single serving of usucha, and it whisks easily with either of our chasen. It is the sister bowl to our Karamine Chawan, the same shape in three bands of glaze.
Mino ware (美濃焼, Mino-yaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated pottery traditions, produced in the Gifu Prefecture region for over 1,300 years and known for the sheer variety of its glazes and techniques.
Made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Diameter: 11 cm
Height: 6.5 cm
Please note: glaze, colour and size vary a little from bowl to bowl. That is the nature of handmade Japanese ceramics.
Ships Australia-wide and worldwide, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of matcha bowls, or read Know Your Chawan if you are choosing your first bowl.
Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
