Karamine Chawan, Japanese Matcha Bowl

Karamine (唐峰): kara, China, and mine, a mountain peak. Three glazes stacked like a hillside at dusk.

The Karamine Chawan is a Mino ware matcha bowl in three bands of glaze: a crackled cream base, a glossy copper-red band across the middle, and a bright green glaze at the rim that runs down over the red in a wavy edge. The green carries over the lip, so the inside is crackled cream with a green ring at the top, and the foot is left as bare clay. At 11 cm across and 6.5 cm high it is a compact bowl that sits well in one hand, the right size for a single serving of usucha, and it whisks easily with either of our chasen. It is the sister bowl to our Kara-Tōge Chawan, the same shape in blue-black over white.

Mino ware (美濃焼, Mino-yaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated pottery traditions, produced in the Gifu Prefecture region for over 1,300 years and known for the sheer variety of its glazes and techniques.
