Shima, meaning stripe. Three navy bands on white, with tiny marks scratched through them.

The Shima Chawan is a Tokoname matcha bowl in white with three navy-black stripes circling a flared body, small stars, triangles and circles scratched through the stripes, and a thin navy line on the lip. The inside is white, so the colour of your matcha shows honestly against it. The flared shape opens to 12 cm across at 6.7 cm high, giving the whisk plenty of room, and it whisks easily with either of our chasen.

Tokoname, in Aichi Prefecture, is one of Japan's six ancient kiln towns, with about 900 years of kiln history.

Made in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

Diameter: 12 cm
Height: 6.7 cm

Please note: glaze, colour and size vary a little from bowl to bowl. That is the nature of handmade Japanese ceramics.

Ships Australia-wide and worldwide, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of matcha bowls, or read Know Your Chawan if you are choosing your first bowl.

Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
