Ryokucha means green tea, and the glaze is close to the colour of the drink — a soft, pale yellow-green, smooth and evenly glossed. The form is rounder and quieter than our fluted holders: a plain teardrop on a low foot, with only faint panel lines under the glaze.

It is worth being plain about what happens without one. The tines close in as they dry and stiffen in that position, so the next bowl fights you — the whisk pushes powder around instead of breaking it up, and you get foam on top and grit underneath. People usually blame the matcha. It is generally the whisk, and it is generally how it was dried.
