Hand-carved from a single piece of bamboo, with 80 evenly shaped tines (an 80-tate): the classic whisk for a chawan. It breaks up the fine clumps in matcha and builds the dense, even foam that gives the tea its texture.

These are Takayama chasen, made in Takayama, Ikoma City, in Nara Prefecture, the district that has been the home of the bamboo tea whisk for around 500 years and still produces almost all of Japan's chasen. Takayama chasen carry Japan's official Traditional Craft (伝統的工芸品) designation. Our maker's work was exhibited at the Louvre Palace Museum in Paris, France, in 2008.

We are the only stockist they supply in Australia

Our chasen come from Chikumeido (竹茗堂), the Takayama workshop of Kubo Sabun (久保左文). They decline other approaches from Australia. Taka buys from them directly and in person. Most recently on a visit in 2025.

Every whisk is made to order by hand, and the workshop's lead time currently runs beyond three months. That is why our range stays small and why a whisk occasionally sells out. It is not a delivery wait, anything in stock here ships from us in Australia straight away.
