Online Japanese Tea Class for Beginners: Matcha and Sencha
Two hours, live on Zoom: first how Japanese tea is made and how to brew it, then a bowl of matcha and a pot of sencha, made step by step in your own kitchen.
When
Saturday 28 November 2026, 2:00 to 4:00 pm Sydney time (AEDT)
- Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart: 2:00 to 4:00 pm
- Brisbane: 1:00 to 3:00 pm
- Adelaide: 1:30 to 3:30 pm
- Darwin: 12:30 to 2:30 pm
- Perth: 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
- Auckland: 4:00 to 6:00 pm
How the two hours run
One class, two sessions, with a short break in between.
Session 1 (about an hour): Tea knowledge
Taka explains Japanese tea: the types of Japanese tea, how green tea and matcha are made, the history of Japanese tea, and how to brew each tea.
A short break, time to put the kettle on.
Session 2 (about an hour): Demonstration
Taka makes each tea on camera, one step at a time, and you make it with him at home:
- Matcha: the bowl, the whisk and the scoop, then your first bowl.
- Sencha: the kyusu, then your first pot and a second steep.
Along the way you'll learn three things that make a difference to every cup you make at home: how much tea to use, how to cool the water, and how to move your hands. For matcha, that means whisking from the wrist. For sencha, it means pouring in rounds. Questions are welcome throughout.
