Oribe Chasen Naoshi, Japanese Matcha Whisk Holder

Oribe is one of the historic green glazes of Mino ware. Here it pools deep and glassy over fine vertical ribbing, darkening almost to black in the recesses and at the foot, thinning to a warm olive where it runs over the ridges.

The reason to own one is less obvious than shape: water. After whisking, liquid collects inside the crown of the chasen, at the base of the tines, where it cannot evaporate. That trapped water is where mould starts and where a musty smell comes from, and once bamboo holds a smell, it ends up in your tea. Sitting the whisk over this dome opens the crown and lets air move through it.
