Mon, meaning gate. Bands of iron brown, matte outside and glossy within.
The Mon Chawan is a Mino ware matcha bowl in a matte iron-brown glaze with paler grey-brown bands circling the body, over a white clay that shows at the foot ring. The inside is a glossy dark brown with a spiral at the centre from the potter's wheel, and whisked matcha glows bright green against it. At 11.5 cm across and 7.5 cm high it is a standard single-serving bowl with room for a relaxed whisk.
Mino ware (美濃焼, Mino-yaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated pottery traditions, produced in the Gifu Prefecture region for over 1,300 years and known for the sheer variety of its glazes and techniques.
Made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Diameter: 11.5 cm
Height: 7.5 cm
Please note: glaze, colour and size vary a little from bowl to bowl. That is the nature of handmade Japanese ceramics.
Ships Australia-wide and worldwide, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of matcha bowls, or read Know Your Chawan if you are choosing your first bowl.
Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
