Kawa, meaning river. Moss-green banks under a turquoise stream.
The Kawa Chawan is a Mino ware matcha bowl in three layers of glaze: a rough moss-green lower body ringed with throwing ridges, a band of bright turquoise above it, and a pale blue-white glaze at the rim that drifts down into the turquoise. The inside is cream with a blue-green ring at the lip, so the colour of your matcha shows honestly against it. At 12 cm across and 7.5 cm high it gives the whisk plenty of room and sits comfortably in two hands.
Mino ware (美濃焼, Mino-yaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated pottery traditions, produced in the Gifu Prefecture region for over 1,300 years and known for the sheer variety of its glazes and techniques.
Made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Diameter: 12 cm
Height: 7.5 cm
Please note: glaze, colour and size vary a little from bowl to bowl. That is the nature of handmade Japanese ceramics.
Ships Australia-wide and worldwide, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of matcha bowls, or read Know Your Chawan if you are choosing your first bowl.
Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
