Hisui, meaning jade. A soft grey-green glaze over gentle throwing lines.
The Hisui Chawan is a Mino ware matcha bowl in a matte, faintly speckled glaze the colour of pale jade, grey-green in shadow and almost white in the light, laid over the throwing lines that ring the body. The foot is bare sandy clay. The inside is the same pale grey-green, so the colour of your matcha shows honestly against it. At 12.5 cm across and 7.5 cm high it gives the whisk plenty of room and sits comfortably in two hands.
Mino ware (美濃焼, Mino-yaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated pottery traditions, produced in the Gifu Prefecture region for over 1,300 years and known for the sheer variety of its glazes and techniques.
Made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Diameter: 12.5 cm
Height: 7.5 cm
Please note: glaze, colour and size vary a little from bowl to bowl. That is the nature of handmade Japanese ceramics.
Ships Australia-wide and worldwide, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of matcha bowls, or read Know Your Chawan if you are choosing your first bowl.
Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
