Gin means silver. The glaze is a smoky slate-teal, matte and finely speckled, breaking to a paler grey where it runs over the fluting, a surface that reads differently depending on the light. Fine vertical ribs fall from the crown to a flared foot.
A chasen naoshi is a whisk holder, and its job is shape. Bamboo tines dry into whatever position you leave them in. Rest a wet chasen in a cup and the tines set inward, closed and stiff; rest it over this dome and they dry splayed into the curve that actually whisks. That shape is most of what you paid for in the whisk.
Mino ware, made in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Sized for our standard 80-tate chasen. Our matcha whisk guide covers priming, cleaning and storage in full.
