Chikurin, meaning bamboo forest. Bamboo painted on a white moon against a black night.

The Chikurin Chawan is a Mino ware matcha bowl in a glossy black glaze with a large white panel on the front, painted with bamboo leaves and stems in soft black and grey, so the whole scene reads like bamboo against a full moon. The black glaze runs over the lip and fills the inside, so whisked matcha glows almost neon against it. The foot is left as bare sandy clay. At 11.5 cm across and 7.5 cm high it is a standard single-serving bowl with room for a relaxed whisk.

Mino ware (美濃焼, Mino-yaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated pottery traditions, produced in the Gifu Prefecture region for over 1,300 years and known for the sheer variety of its glazes and techniques.

Made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.

Diameter: 11.5 cm
Height: 7.5 cm

Please note: glaze, colour and size vary a little from bowl to bowl. That is the nature of handmade Japanese ceramics.

Ships Australia-wide and worldwide, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of matcha bowls, or read Know Your Chawan if you are choosing your first bowl.

Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
