Akane-Shibori (茜絞り), the name of this design. Fine pink-red veins over dark clay.

The Akane-Shibori Kyusu is a Tokoname teapot by Gyokko (玉光), low and wide, in a matte dark brown clay with fine pink-red veins across the lid and around the body, and the potter's seal pressed into the body below the handle. Inside, a ceramic strainer with fine round holes is built in across the spout, so the leaves stay in the pot. The side handle is held in one hand with the thumb resting on the lid, so pouring to the last drop is a turn of the wrist. At 240 ml it fills about two small Japanese tea cups (100 ml each). It comes from the same maker as our Gyokko Kyusu, in a lower, flatter shape.

Tokoname, in Aichi Prefecture, is Japan's teapot capital and one of its oldest pottery towns, with about 900 years of kiln history.

Made in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

Volume: 240 ml

Care: empty the leaves after each pot, rinse with hot water only, no detergent, and dry with the lid off.

Please note: shape, colour and capacity vary a little from pot to pot.

Ships Australia-wide and worldwide, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of Japanese teapots, or read how to choose a kyusu if this is your first pot.

Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
