Japanese Teaware, a Tool for Each Step
Japanese tea has a tool for each part of it, and each one exists for a reason. A chawan is wide enough to whisk in. A chasen breaks up matcha in a way nothing else does. A kyusu pours a short, precise steep. A yunomi holds the heat of a small serving. None of it is decoration.
Most of our ceramics come from Japan's pottery towns: Tokoname, home of the Japanese teapot, along with Mino, Hasami, Kutani and Banko. Where pieces are shaped and finished by hand, no two match exactly. Glazes can pool and break differently from piece to piece; the wabi-sabi aesthetic these objects come from treats the irregular piece as the more interesting one.
Every item is chosen by Taka Kaneko, one of only two Japanese Tea Instructors in Australia certified by the NPO Nihoncha Instructor Association. We ship Australia-wide and worldwide, with free Australian shipping over $100.
