Tsukikage (月影), moonlight: a wash of white glaze laid across a blue-grey ground.

The Tsukikage Yunomi is a 130 ml cup with its own saucer, from Mino. The cup is speckled off-white on one side and a soft slate blue-grey on the other, the two glazes meeting in a clean diagonal, with the blue-grey carried through to the inside. The saucer is a five-petal flower shape in the same blue-grey with a fine brown edge, and the cup sits in a raised ring at its centre. This shape is called an ippuku-wan (一服碗), a bowl for a single serving, and it takes tea or coffee alike: a bowl of hojicha in the afternoon, a small matcha latte, or a serving of usucha for a guest. The pieces also work on their own, the cup as a teacup and the saucer as a small plate.

Mino ware (美濃焼, Mino-yaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated pottery traditions, produced in the Gifu Prefecture region for over 1,300 years and known for the sheer variety of its glazes and techniques.

Made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.

Cup: 130 ml, 7.2 cm diameter, 6 cm high
Saucer: 12 cm diameter, 2 cm high

Please note: shape, colour and capacity vary a little from piece to piece. That is the nature of handmade Japanese ceramics.

Ships Australia-wide and worldwide from our Sydney studio, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of Japanese tea cups.

Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
