Sumi, meaning ink. Brushed black stripes on cream, with its own saucer.

The Sumi Yunomi is a Mino ware cup and saucer: the cup brushed with vertical stripes of glossy black ink over cream, with a black handle and a glossy black inside, and a 14 cm saucer that carries the same stripes around a cream centre. At 170 ml it is a small cup for sencha or gyokuro poured again and again, and the saucer makes it a gift that arrives complete.

Mino ware (美濃焼, Mino-yaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated pottery traditions, produced in the Gifu Prefecture region for over 1,300 years and known for the sheer variety of its glazes and techniques.

Made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.

Cup volume: 170 ml
Cup diameter: 8 cm
Cup height: 6.5 cm
Saucer diameter: 14 cm
Saucer height: 2 cm

Please note: shape, colour and capacity vary a little from piece to piece. That is the nature of handmade Japanese ceramics.

Ships Australia-wide and worldwide, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of Japanese tea cups, or a kyusu to pour from.

Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
