Shiro (白), meaning white. A white open bowl with a side handle and a band of fine dots.
The Shiro Yuzamashi is a Tokoname hot water cooler: a wide white bowl on a small foot, with a pouring lip on one side, a hollow side handle on the other and a band of fine dotted rows on the body. The inside is the same clean white.
A yuzamashi cools boiling water before it meets the leaves. Pour boiling water into the bowl and let it cool to your brewing temperature before it goes onto the tea: about 70 to 80°C for sencha and matcha, and cooler still for gyokuro.
Tokoname, in Aichi Prefecture, is one of Japan's six ancient kiln towns, with about 900 years of kiln history.
Made in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
Maker: 淳蔵

Please note: shape, colour and capacity vary a little from piece to piece.
Ships Australia-wide and worldwide, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of Japanese teaware, or a kyusu to pour it into.
Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
