Sanshi-Suimei (山紫水明), meaning "purple mountains, clear waters," a classical phrase describing scenery of quiet natural beauty.

The Sanshi-Suimei Chawan captures that imagery in glaze: a soft, misted grey gathers at the rim and rolls downward like fog settling over distant mountains, fading gently into a clean, pale white body below, as still and clear as water. The effect is quiet and atmospheric, evoking landscape rather than depicting it directly, in keeping with the understated elegance the phrase has long represented in Japanese art and poetry.

Mino ware (美濃焼, Mino-yaki) originates in the historic Mino Province, now Gifu Prefecture in central Japan, with a ceramic tradition spanning over 1,300 years. It remains one of Japan's most celebrated pottery styles, prized for its rich variety of glazes, textures, and techniques.

Made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.

Diameter: 12 cm
Height: 6.5 cm

Please note: As each piece is individually glazed, variations in colour, texture, and pattern are a natural and celebrated part of Mino ware's character.

Ships Australia-wide and worldwide from our Sydney studio, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of matcha bowls.

Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
