Kujira, from the Japanese word for whale. A cup with a handle and its own small saucer.
The Kujira Yunomi is a Mino ware cup and saucer: a white cup with blue glaze dripping down over a black lower body and foot, a handle, and a small saucer glazed the same way with a blue-dripped rim. The inside is white. A pale inside shows the colour of the tea honestly, so you can judge a sencha at a glance. At 170 ml it is a cup for sharing a pot of sencha between friends, and the saucer makes it a gift that arrives complete.
Mino ware (美濃焼, Mino-yaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated pottery traditions, produced in the Gifu Prefecture region for over 1,300 years and known for the sheer variety of its glazes and techniques.
Made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Cup volume: 170 ml
Cup diameter: 8 cm
Cup height: 6.5 cm
Please note: shape, colour and capacity vary a little from piece to piece. That is the nature of handmade Japanese ceramics.
Ships Australia-wide and worldwide, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of Japanese tea cups, or a kyusu to pour from.
Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
