Karakusa (唐草), a scrolling arabesque vine pattern, one of the most enduring motifs in Japanese design.
The Karakusa Yunomi pairs a deep charcoal-grey glaze with a bold white scrolling vine, finished with a warm brown-toned rim. Rooted in a design tradition that dates back centuries, the karakusa pattern has long symbolised vitality and continuity, its unbroken, winding form was once used to wrap and protect precious belongings. Here it wraps the cup instead, giving it a striking, graphic presence on the table.
Hasami ware (波佐見焼, Hasami-yaki) hails from the town of Hasami in northern Nagasaki Prefecture, with a ceramic tradition spanning over 400 years. Today, Hasami remains one of Japan's top three regions by shipment volume for everyday tableware, prized for its durable, easy-to-use porcelain and its consistency from piece to piece.
Made in Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan.
Volume: 200 ml
Diameter: 8 cm
Height: 6.3 cm
Please note: As with all Hasami ware, slight variation in glaze and finish is a natural part of each piece's character.
Ships Australia-wide and worldwide from our Sydney studio, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of Japanese tea cups.
Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
