Jōmon, meaning the prehistoric era in Japan. Cord marks in the clay, glazed turquoise.
The Jōmon 1 Yunomi is a big Mino ware mug with rows of cord-like impressions pressed into the clay, the mark the pottery of the Jōmon period is named for, under a glossy turquoise glaze that pools in the hollows. The inside is the same turquoise. At 560 ml and 10 cm tall it is closer to a mug than a cup, the biggest in our range, for a long evening pot of hōjicha or genmaicha. Its twin is the Jōmon 2 Yunomi, the same mug in white with brown speckle.
Mino ware (美濃焼, Mino-yaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated pottery traditions, produced in the Gifu Prefecture region for over 1,300 years and known for the sheer variety of its glazes and techniques.
Made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Volume: 560 ml
Diameter: 9 cm
Height: 10 cm
Please note: shape, colour and capacity vary a little from piece to piece. That is the nature of handmade Japanese ceramics.
Ships Australia-wide and worldwide, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of Japanese tea cups, or a kyusu to pour from.
Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
