Harugasumi (春霞), spring haze: cherry blossom seen through the soft grey of an early-spring morning.
The Harugasumi Yunomi is a Mino ware cup in a speckled grey stoneware glaze, with a window of white on one side filled with pink sakura blossoms and the odd green leaf, the flowers fading at the edges like a view through mist. The other side is plain grey, the rim is finished with a darker line, and the foot is bare clay. It is a bowl-shaped cup, 10 cm across and 6 cm high, a comfortable size for sencha, hojicha or genmaicha, and it doubles as a small bowl for a casual serving of usucha. Turn the blossoms toward your guest when you serve.
Mino ware (美濃焼, Mino-yaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated pottery traditions, produced in the Gifu Prefecture region for over 1,300 years and known for the sheer variety of its glazes and techniques.
Made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Diameter: 10 cm
Height: 6 cm
Please note: glaze, colour and size vary a little from piece to piece. That is the nature of handmade Japanese ceramics.
Ships Australia-wide and worldwide from our Sydney studio, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of Japanese tea cups.
Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
