Akane (茜), the madder red of old Japanese dyes. A red-brown open bowl with a side handle.

The Akane Yuzamashi is a Tokoname hot water cooler in a smooth red-brown clay: a wide, open bowl on a small foot, with a pouring lip on one side and a hollow side handle on the other. The inside is plain.

Use it as you would any yuzamashi. Pour boiling water into the bowl, let it cool to your brewing temperature, then pour it onto the leaves. About 70 to 80°C suits sencha and matcha, and gyokuro likes it cooler still.

Tokoname, in Aichi Prefecture, is one of Japan's six ancient kiln towns, with about 900 years of kiln history.

Made in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

Maker: 竹春
Volume: 400 ml

Please note: shape, colour and capacity vary a little from piece to piece.

Ships Australia-wide and worldwide, with free Australian shipping on orders over $100. See the full range of Japanese teaware, or a kyusu to pour it into.

Each piece is made by hand, so the glaze on yours will differ from the photograph. That variation is the character of the piece, not a flaw.
