Nanbu Tekki is a traditional Japanese craft born in Morioka and Oshu, Iwate Prefecture. Its origins trace back to the Edo period, when the tea ceremony flourished among feudal lords, giving rise to a tradition of cast iron artistry that has been refined ever since.
Each Nanbu Tekki iron kettle is shaped by the accumulated skill of the artisan — every technique building toward both beauty and function. The fine Arale pattern seen on this piece, along with its distinctive form, reflects the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibility passed down through generations, representing the tradition and prestige of Nanbu ironware at its finest.
These kettles are made using the yakigata method, in which molten iron is poured into a handmade sand mould. Because each mould can only produce a single piece, no two kettles are ever truly identical. The process moves through many stages — from mould-making to casting to colouring — before a single kettle is complete.
